My Journey

More Apple stuff. iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro…you get the idea

So Apples iPhone event happened today and as expected they revealed pretty much everything that had already been leaked. This means not many surprises but as they had already had an event dedicated to the new Apple watches and iPads, we have some new Apple tech to peruse. Here’s everything Apple announced.

So first things first, as expected, Apple officially announced the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max. This time we get the new/old design from the iPhone 4 and slightly bigger screen sizes. The Pro comes in at 6.1 inches and the Pro Max has a 6.7 inch display making it the biggest iPhone display ever. The Pro models feature a stainless steel design (instead of the aluminum on the iPhone 12) in four colors: gray, stainless steel, gold, and a new blue.

The new iPhone 12 Pro models will feature Apple’s A14 Bionic chip — first introduced on the refreshed iPad Air last month — which VP Greg Joswiak has previously said was the “most powerful chip ever made” by Apple. The new chip is Apple’s first to use a 5nm process (instead of the 7nm process used on last year’s A13 Bionic). Apple says that both the new six-core CPU and the four-core GPU are the fastest ever, with performance that the company claims is up to 50 percent faster than any other phone.

The new iPhones also come with 5G and Apple made a big deal of that in the event. The Pro models also get the LIDAR sensor from the iPad Pro along with some new additions to the camera system

Like last year’s iPhone 11 Pro models, Apple is once again offering a triple-camera system on both the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max, with 12-megapixel wide, telephoto, and ultrawide camera lenses. The wide camera now offers a faster f/1.6 aperture, which Apple says offers 27 percent improved low-light performance, while the 52mm focal telephoto now offers four times optical zoom.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max builds out the camera system even further. There’s a new 12MP telephoto with a 65mm focal length that can optically zoom in up to 2.5 times. There’s a new wide camera with an f/1.6 aperture and a new OIS system. The wide sensor is also 47 percent larger, which combines with the lower aperture for 87 percent better low-light performance.

Like the iPhone 12 and 12 mini, the two iPhone 12 Pro models will also be compatible with Apple’s newly announced MagSafe wireless chargers and accessories, which offer magnetically attached cases, charging pads, and even attachments like wallets.

Apple will be removing its included USB wall bricks and wired EarPod headphones from the box on the new iPhones as part of the company’s ongoing environmental goals, a change that mirrors the company’s move in removing wall bricks from its Apple Watch smartwatchesearlier this year. Apple will, however, still include a USB-C to Lightning cable in the box for charging.

Along with the two flagships, there are also two more new iPhones. The iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 mini, which are set to replace last year’s iPhone 11 models.

The new iPhone 12 is set to replace last year’s iPhone 11 as the default choice for most people, a mix of the best features from Apple’s more expensive phones while still having a reasonable price. As expected, the iPhones 12 keeps the 6.1-inch screen size that was found on the iPhone XR and 11, but this year Apple has finally put an OLED display in its more affordable iPhones. It also has a new design that looks a lot like the iPad Air, with squared-off edges instead of the rounded ones we’ve seen on iPhones for several years now.

While the screen size is the same, Apple says the iPhone 12 is smaller than the 11 in all ways; it’s thinner, with smaller screen bezels and slightly less overall weight. That’s thanks in part to the OLED display, which takes up less room. It also significantly improves the screen resolution over the iPhone 11: 2532 x 1170, which works out to 460 pixels per inch. That’s a huge upgrade over the older iPhone XR and 11. Apple has also improved the glass on the front with a “ceramic shield” through a partnership with Corning. The company says that the screen is four times more drop resistant than it was before

After detailing the iPhone 12, the company announced the iPhone 12 mini. The phone features a 5.4-inch OLED display. That gives it a larger screen than the 4.7-inch display on the 2020 iPhone SE. Apple claims the new device is the smallest and lightest 5G phone in the world.

Despite its diminutive size, the iPhone 12 mini has all the same headline features as its 6.1-inch sibling. Internally, it includes Apple’s new 5nm A14 Bionic chipset. According to Apple, the A14 is 15 percent faster than the A13 Bionic while consuming 30 percent less power. It also comes with the same rear camera system, with the Mini featuring a new 12-megapixel primary camera that has an f/1.6 aperture lens. Apple says the new camera performs 27 percent better in low light conditions than the main camera on the iPhone 11.

Following a series of leaks, there wasn’t too much mystery about whether Apple would reveal a smaller version of its HomePod smart speaker at today’s event. It did just that when it announced the HomePod mini.

It has a spherical design and runs on Apple’s S5 processor, the same chip that powers Apple Watch SE and Watch Series 5. The current HomePod boasts Apple’s A8 processor. At 3.3 inches, the HomePod mini is less than half as tall as the HomePod.

HomePod mini costs $99 and it’s available in white and space gray. Pre-orders for the HomePod mini open on November 6th and it starts shipping the week of November 16th.

Apple has long retired its MagSafe power ports, but it’s bringing back the name for a line of wireless chargers and cases. The new wireless chargers are able to deliver up to 15W of power, and use magnets to ensure your device is correctly positioned. At launch there’ll be two options, the standard MagSafe Charger and the MagSafe Duo Charger, which, as the name suggests, can charge two devices: the iPhone and Apple Watch.

The MagSafe brand will also be applied to a new set of accessories, which include a magnetic wallet that snaps to the back of the iPhone. There’s a new leather cover that switches the phone into a clock mode. There will also be a line of MagSafe cases in silicone, leather and clear plastic. Apple has said that we can also expect MagSafe accessories from third-party manufacturers.

October is nuts for new tech and despite the pandemic, new stuff seems to be coming thick and fast. The new generation of consoles launch in less than a month!
